The Caroline Family Health Team of Burlington, with eight physicians, allied health professionals and support staff required more space to house their busy practice. Several ideas were explored through feasibility studies including the additional of another storey and elevator to their existing building. The final solution was to relocate the practice to a more suitable location with a total interior renovation to meet the needs of the clinic. The project explores the adaptation of a specific, user-generated design to an existing industrial “big box” space. The building’s 26-foot ceilings are celebrated, and exposed above functional blocks which house the clinic, staff area and monumental central service core. Strategically placed skylights distribute natural light throughout the space. The layout of the office was developed through participatory design workshops which included the entire clinic’s staff and the dp.Ai team. Using 3D modeling, the ideas generated by the design workshops were explored and developed. Funding was sought from the Transitional Funding Program for Family Health Teams, with dp.Ai working in collaboration with Administrative staff, to prepare Ministry of Health submissions. |
