Project Architect: David Premi Architect of Record: RDH Architects with Lett Architects Award(s): Ontario Association of Architects 2007 Design Excellence Award David Premi acted as Project Architect and Design Team Leader for this prestigious new building in the heart of Ryerson University campus. The Faculty of Continuing Education serves more than 45,000 adult students with 1,000 courses and 71 certificate programs. The building supports many Continuing Education programs delivered through distance learning, on-campus courses, and off-site programs for corporate clients. The seventh floor houses a state of the art Presentation technology suite that also functions as an event space. The design process was highly collaborative, involving User groups and other stakeholders throughout. The design is successful in its integration with the highly sensitive campus centre, Devonion Square. Through a dramatic cantilever over the pond, choice of materials, incorporation of a heritage facade, and the extension of the landscape through the ground floor of the building, the project successful conveys a dynamic high technology image while respecting the urban and academic environments. Sustainable design attributes include storm water, quantity control, maximum open space, light pollution reduction, energy recovery, best practice commissioning, refrigerant management, re-use of existing heritage facade, high recycled content, outdoor air delivery monitoring, low-emitting materials, controllability of lighting, thermal comfort verification, and deep daylight penetration. |
