The prominent location of the centre presents opportunities for the building to function as an art object; a “billboard” that can display messages, changing new media installations, screen film and video, or simply a soft glow of light to mark its presence within the fabric of theart district at night. The tower addition to the complex can serve as a gateway to the gallery district. The complex is comprised of three existing buildings with a series of additions knitting the complex into a coherent whole. The centre includes gallery space, a café, offices, and “Artist in Residence” live/work space, artists’ studio space, and an outdoor courtyard. The walls of the courtyard were designed as retractable allowing the entire ground floor space to act as a large function space when weather permits. Video
